Y8 Key Skills Assignment 1

Key Skills Assignment 1

Assignment 1

Scenario

A local mobile phone retailer has approached the school asking if it would be possible to sell mobile phones, top up cards etc. at lunch times. There should be a strong market for this among students and so the school have agreed, providing they receive a share of the profits. The retailer has therefore commissioned you, as an ICT student to carry out some research to find out what would sell best among students as there is only a limited amount of products that can be sold.

You need to carry out a survey to find out some information from at least 15 students from Birches Head who own mobile phones, such as:

  • What make of phone they own
  • Whether they are on contract or pay-as-you-go
  • How much money they spend a month on their phone and calls.
  • Any other information that you feel is relevant

Once you have gathered the information you will need to summarise your findings to the retailer . You should also recommend one network, one contract type and three models of phone to be sold in the school based on what people have told you about their phones. You may wish to illustrate your findings with images of the phones you choose and include the numerical data that you base your findings on. You should suggest a price that is based on how much these phones really cost – you will need to find these prices yourself. You should also include graphs presenting the results of your questionnaire.

This project will also allow you to gather evidence for your Key Skills IT portfolio as follows:

1.        An initial plan of action explaining how you are going to go about completing this project.

  • Details of how you have gone about completing the task.
  • Details of where you got the information about the phones you recommend. This might take the form of photocopies of any documents you used, an Internet search log and printouts / screen dumps of the Internet search you used and the pages where you find your information.
  • Printouts showing how you have developed your information, including any drafts showing the stages you have gone through.
  • Printouts showing the development of how you presented your information, including any drafts showing the stages you have gone through.
  • Evidence that you have checked your work for spelling and clarity.
  • Evidence that you have saved your work appropriately, like a screen dump of all the files on your disk.
  • Your final document should combine Text and Images, Text and Number or all three.

Key Skills Assignment 2

Travel Pricing Assignment

Scenario

You have recently started work at a small independent travel agency and you have been asked to do some research to examine the holiday prices of travel agencies with an online sales presence. Your manager has asked that you gather and compare information about different holiday packages from several different agencies for a family of four.

The family consists of two adults and two children aged 8 and 13. They are not certain where they want to go for their holiday and they don’t have a set budget. The family wants to travel from a London airport and they want to depart on the 10th July and return on the 24th July. Both adults have full driving licenses. The family have expressed an interest in the following destinations:

Florida                 The Balearic Islands  Benidorm               New York

The Canary Islands       Rome                            Barcelona                     Ireland

The Grand Canyon        Greece

Your colleagues in the travel agency will look at any destinations you don’t choose, so just pick three or four.

In order to complete this task you should:

 1)        Carry out appropriate research to find packages from different travel companies.

2)       Present your recommendations for the family. You should present at least four different holiday options and compare the costs for each.

3)       You should break down the cost of each holiday as much as possible showing separate costs per person for flights, accommodation, tax and any other costs such as car rental or excursions and a total for each package.

4)       E-mail your findings to your manager (ssimcock@sgfl.org.uk)

This Assignment will allow you to gather evidence for your Key Skills IT Portfolio at Level 2.

You will need to produce the following evidence of your work for this assignment:

 1)       Evidence showing where you found your information. If you use the Internet to find your information you should provide screen printouts showing the search terms and techniques you used and printouts of the pages where you found your information.

2)      A report that presents your findings in an appropriate format.

3)      Drafts including any preparatory work and calculations you have carried out.

4)   Evidence of e-mails sent and received
