1.08.1 CAD CAM (quality 79%)
If you want to revise this topic before you take the test, you will find this section of our online encyclopedia useful.
1.08.2 CAD CAM: Design Your Own Packaging
You need to have completed the Pro Desktop 3-D Design drill exercise (GCSE Double Award in Applied ICT Unit 01 Module 08 Image Manipulation/CAD CAM - Drills) and the Economics of CAD/CAM Production task before you attempt this task. Ask your teacher to assign them to you if they have not already done so.

In your Pro/Desktop drill you created an indoor water feature. In order to sell the product it needs to be attractively packaged and the manufacturers have decided on a box.

They have asked you to create two designs from which they will choose one.

In this task you will:
  • Create two designs for the packaging of your indoor water feature
  • Explore whether your design is efficient and economical in its use of card.

This task should not take more than 4 hours and you will need the following resources:
  • Paper and pencil or pen
  • A3 card
  • 2-D Design
  • Drawing software
  • Access to a printer.
You will need to upload all your images and files to the appropriate cards in this task. You will also need to save all the paper/card drawings and designs you have created to add to your portfolio later.

Remember to save each version of your work with a separate file name. You will get more marks if you can show the process you have gone through to create the finished version.

1.08.3 CAD CAM: The Economics of CAD/CAM Production
You need to have completed the 2-D Design drill (GCSE Double Award in Applied ICT Unit 01 Module 08 Image Manipulation/CAD CAM - Drills) before attempting this task. Ask your teacher to assign it to you if they have not already done so.

Use the following links to help you:

You are going to use the Malteser net that you created in your design drill to show how it is possible to be economical with packaging material (remember that the dimensions are scaled down not actual size).

Upload all your images and files to the appropriate cards in this task.

Remember to save each version of your work with a separate file name. You will get more marks if you can show the process you have gone through to create the finished version.

1.08.4 Image Manipulation/CAD CAM - Drills
Your aim in this task is to practise your skills so that you can use image manipulation, 2-D and 3-D design efficiently and effectively.
1.08.5 CAD CAM in Organisations: External Portfolio
(This task is required for AQA and can be used to enhance portfolios for students studying another syllabus)

You are going to give a detailed description and evaluation of three different ways in which your chosen organisation(s) uses each of the following types of software:

  • CAD/CAM
  • Sensing and control
  • Image manipulation

You may use the same organisation to demonstrate each type of software or you may use three different organisations, one for each of the software types. You may not use three different organisations to demonstrate one type of software.

Ideally you should use real organisation(s) for this task but you can do it as a general description. The general description will not get you as many marks.

Below are links to real companies which use the relevant software:

CAD/CAM

Sensing and Control 1
or Sensing and Control 2
Image Manipulation

Here are some of the ways in which each type of software can be used.

CAD/CAM

  • Viewing designs in 3D format
  • Making designs to exact measurements
  • Using CAM software to control CNC machines

Sensing and control

  • Being able to program machines to do particular jobs
  • Being able to get a high degree of accuracy
  • Using feedback loops to react to external stimuli

Image manipulation software

  • Enhancing a digital image
  • Separate layers for image components
  • Output using professional colour separations

If you use any images or files to complete the tasks, you will need to upload them to the appropriate cards in this task.

Remember to save each version of your work with a separate file name. You will get more marks if you can show the process you have gone through to create the finished version.
