These quizzes reinforce the exercises in the Chalkface Literacy Basics worksheets Pack 1 and Pack 3. There is a direct correspondence between the quizzes and the page numbers in each pack.

There are 10 questions per quiz. They use a rich variety of different question types to maintain interest, and every question includes formative feedback.

To get the most out of these quizzes:

  • use them in conjunction with the worksheets, either beforehand as diagnostics, or afterwards as reinforcement.
  • for reinforcement, allow 2-3 attempts per quiz, but not more.
  • for diagnostic use, allow only one attempt per quiz.
  • when assigning to a whole class, use the Teams feature to encourage competition.

The Wordles quiz covers 20 of the 32 topics and can be used for general reinforcement. It is not suitable as a general diagnostic, because its highly visual nature would skew the results. The Wordles themselves were created on wordle.net.

This suite of resources is designed to test students from Year 5 through to Adult Learners on the various homonyms and near homophones which can be so confusing, and which are so often misused. Use the tests:

  • Diagnostically to identify areas of weakness
  • As re-inforcement exercises to work on areas of weakness
  • For revision

We recommend that you give each student the diagnostic test initially. The results of this will show you each student's strengths and weaknesses by word class (e.g. where/were/we're). Specific tests are then available so that you can target your teaching effectively.

When young people start to understand where words come from and how they are grouped, they gain more than an appreciation of the beauty of the English language. Their spelling and grammar improve markedly, as does their ability to learn many foreign languages. From the pen of Kara Huck at Dodge City High School, Kansas.
